So...Razvan had to save me from my crazy, fucked up ex last night. Jason followed me home and he...well I don't know what he was trying to do. Convince me he was going to rape me, actually rape me, just scare me, hurt me...I don't know, but Razvan was there and he said Jason was a demon and apparently so is he and so is Deirdre and Spectre, you're an angel and Timothy and Flynn totally know...

That's a bit of a headspin and I was freaking out so I told Noah too. He'll keep it quiet. I think he thinks I'm nuts. I kind of do too, but Razvan showed me his wings and I knew he was safe because he did save me and I spent the night in his arms and I'm fine.

Just...had to get that out there. See you soon, I guess.

Oh, I know!

Yes, I know how that is. Once the wings get involved, especially... Goodness, I'm so thankful for Razvan. He deserves a medal.

Indeed, Eiley and Gabriel are demons. It can be a very difficult thing to go through, as the traits tend to arise with the onset of puberty. With a mother as stable and loving as Deirdre though, I have no doubt they'll grow up to be wonderful people. I think that, just like anyone else, a young demon - or an old one - just needs someone who understands, first and foremost.

And speaking of understanding, you can certainly open this to Peter. I'm sure there's a great deal for you to talk about, if and when you feel you want to.

Razvan was so calm about it and he explained everything and then he said he wouldn't blame me if I left and I just couldn't. He saved me.

Wow. She's one hell of a brave woman. She'll be an excellent mother too. I know that for sure. I have two of them, and she'd fit right in.

I do. Also, Razvan said there's another demon moving in. Isla Littleton. And he said she was Thomas' sister and I got confused until he said Thomas Littleton is your Ash? Is he a demon too?!

Well I'm glad this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. It sounds like you could both be very good presences in each other's lives.

You're certainly right about that! I'm sure Deirdre would be thrilled to hear it.

Ah yes, Isla. I haven't known her for very long, but she seems lovely.

Thomas isn't a demon or an angel, no. The thing with Thomas is a lot more complicated, and though he's human, it involves one of the strangest and most confronting of angelic powers. I'm perfectly happy to explain it to you, but I do want you to understand that this is the very matter that might change a lot of what you feel you know. Much more than the basic existence of demons and angels.

He's not usually affectionate, is he?

Well she can read this, but she's probably mothering!

I'm a little nervous now, but if she's related to Thomas...

....okay? Is he a fucking nymph or something?!

No, he really isn't. I take that to mean that he was, and if that's the case, I do believe that's very special indeed.

Quite so!

I don't think there's any reason to be nervous, at least no more so than is usual for having a new housemate you don't know. Angels, as a general rule, tend to be able to read the "vibe" of a person, and their intentions. Isla seemed to be nothing but sweetness, truly.

The crux of the matter is this: angels have a natural ability - and demons can learn, but with great difficulty - to visit the afterlife. We see dead people, not as ghosts, but in the next place they go. It's hard to remember what it's like there when we come back, but it's quite different from this world. Amongst our group, we call it the Beyond.

I'm not quite sure how it works, scientifically speaking, but if a dead person is truly needed in our world, an angel can bring them back here for a short period of time. The optimum seems to be three weeks to a month. If they've accomplished what they were needed for, the returned person will disappear back to the Beyond with no trouble. If not, the person who needs them will need to actively let them go. And if they can't do that... then things get difficult. It hurts to be trapped here for longer than is natural, so it's always hazardous in that way. It's why sometimes we can't bring people back even when they're needed. Sometimes they're just needed too much.

Thomas we're able to bring back regularly, because James needs him. But because James has more or less grown up with this, he understands, and is able to let Thomas go when the time comes. So it's safe to have him back regularly.

To tell you the truth though, we're having a spot of bother this time around. An angel we know got stoned and brought Thomas back by mistake (I know, I know). Coming back too soon after a visit is also very bad. The body comes back wrong... I'll spare you the details, but at the moment we're just trying to get him back to the Beyond, posthaste.

He was. Like I said, I slept in his arms. And he was a complete gentleman. I felt...really safe.

Razvan said he could read vibes too. Must be handy. I guess he wouldn't let her stay here if she wasn't nice.

Oh, Spectre? Your husband is dead? I'm so sorry. I...well to say I didn't know sounds so idiotic. Is he...sick now?

I will always be grateful to him for that. I don't actually know Razvan all that well, but I do remember hearing that his family have a knack for reading intentions. It's usually more an angel thing than a demon thing, but to be honest, both species can often learn the traits of the other with enough determination.

Thank you, Serenity. It was a long time ago that he died, actually. Fifteen years. It was on one of his returns here that I first met him, so I never knew him when he was alive the first time. As for now... yes, sick is as apt a term as any. Somehow, we ended up calling the condition Zombie Fever, and it stuck. Normally, a dead person's injuries automatically heal themselves as soon as they're dealt. Handy, as you can imagine. With Zombie Fever though, all those old injuries start to return, regardless of whether or not they would have naturally healed in a living person. It's... one of the most horrible things I've ever seen. It's why we're so desperate to return him to the Beyond.

I see.

Shit. Oh, shit, I'm so sorry. Can I do anything for you?!

I don't think there's really much at the moment, but it does help to know that I can talk about these things to you now. You've always been a good friend, but with this barrier aside... it helps just knowing you understand what's going on.

Well I understand as much as I can, I guess.

God... I wish I could do something.
